NAES Corporation, a leading provider of 3rd party O&M services to the independent power industry, is currently recruiting for a Fuel and Ash Supervisor at the Sandy Creek Energy Station, a 900 megawatt coal-fired power plant currently under construction in Riesel, TX.

Consisting of one IHI supercritical pulverized coal boiler, one Toshiba steam turbine generator and Alstom air-quality control systems equipment, it is one of the largest new coal projects in the U.S. and is expected to generate electricity for more than 900,000 Texas homes and businesses.  The plant will utilize Powder River Basin coal. 

GENERAL SUMMARY

Responsible for the supervision of the plant's fuel supply and ash disposal operations.

PRIMARY FUNCTIONS

Direct Coal Yard (CY) personnel in being cognizant of equipment status and operations, particularly as it refers to plant capability and safety.

Plan and schedule work as required. Organize Coal Yard operations, including arranging overtime as needed.

Formulate plans for responding to incidents which might compromise plant safety and Operations.  Recognize hazards of PRB coal handling, and maintain cleanliness of all coal-handling areas.

Assist in the preparation of staffing decisions and support the implementation. Participate in interview process.

Organize and implement training for Coal Yard employees.

Maintain housekeeping to ensure high level of plant safety.

Directs and implements appropriate quality control methods and ensures proper fuel preparation.

Develop daily plan of action for Fuel and Ash operations to provide guidance for all shifts.

Make qualitative assessments of Coal Yard and plant parameters during and following incidents to ascertain what damage has occurred.

Investigate the cause of abnormal or unusual events and assess any adverse effects on Fuel and Ash capability.

Assist Operations employees in interpreting and applying various plant procedures and technical requirements.

Perform reviews of planned maintenance activities for upcoming shifts to ascertain whether special consideration or precautions are warranted. Review previous shift activities and make recommendations as needed to address problems that prevent planned work from being accomplished.

Provide Coal Yard system and equipment technical support for Coal Yard Operations staff. Provide Coal Yard operating personnel with technical guidance to ensure the plant is operated based on system and equipment design specifications. Evaluate Operations activities to verify established plant procedures are followed and utilized.

Monitor and analyze the operation of coal handling equipment. Identify equipment problems, their causes, and assist in developing corrective action plans.

Prepare maintenance work requests determining job steps, skill and manpower requirements, work priority, material requirements, clearance needs, and scope of work for plant Operations employees.

Assist as needed in the preparation of work requests submitted for work to be performed by outside service suppliers.

Provide necessary power plant maintenance planning system data entry.

Coordinate repairs with plant Operations staff and outside service suppliers.

Provide a quality control function on maintenance projects and Coal & Yard equipment operations by inspection and record review. Review, prepare, and maintain required reports and records.

Assist plant management in developing plans, project specifications, and work packages.

Perform other related duties as directed

SCOPE OF RESPONSIBILITY

The Fuel and Ash Supervisor operates from established and well-known procedures under minimum supervision, performing duties independently with only general direction given.  Decisions are made within prescribed operating and casualty procedures and guidelines.  Fuel and Ash Supervisor encounters recurring work situations of high complexity, with occasional variations from the norm.

The Fuel and Ash Supervisor must perform work in a safe manner resulting in no accidents, in compliance with all environmental permits at all times.  The Fuel and Ash Supervisor must effectively communicate information to supervision and fellow plant personnel, relative to the condition of the plant equipment and performance, and provide suggestions for plant improvements.  The Fuel and Ash Supervisor must perform duties in such a way to result in an optimum cost-benefit ratio.

All employees have the responsibility to both the customer and their co-workers to do the job right the first time and to ensure the customer's needs are being met.

WORKING RELATIONSHIPS

The Fuel and Ash Supervisor reports to the Operations Manager, works in cooperation with the operating Coal Yard Technician on matters pertaining to the daily operation of the plant and responds to direction from the Plant Manager in the absence of the Operations Manager.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND WORKING CONDITIONS

Physical requirements include:  working on feet for 12 hour periods, requiring stair and ladder climbing; and routinely lifting 50 pounds. Protective equipment must be worn in the performance of some duties (e.g. hard hats, safety glasses, air masks, ear protection, chemical suits, hot gloves and high voltage protective equipment, etc.).  Work with hazardous materials may be required. Potential work in high heat/cold atmosphere.

Position requires extended working hours and varied shifts with the possibility of weekend and holiday work, as required by schedules, work load and plant conditions.  "On call" status will periodically be required. Occasional overnight travel required.  Days with occasional shift work as required.

All employees will participate in the Fitness for Duty Program.  This program includes a post-offer physical examination and drug screening and post employment random drug screening.  There are extensive smoking restrictions in and around the facility.

JOB QUALIFICATIONS

Ability to understand procedures and instructions specific to the area of assignment as would be acquired in four years of high school.

Five to seven years work experience.  Must have experience with PRB coal operations. Broad knowledge of fossil fuel handling equipment, maintenance and operation is required.

Must have excellent oral and written communication skills, ability to work well with others and be self-directed, as well as apply creative solutions to unique Fuel and Ash problems. 

Must have excellent organizational skills.   Must have strong personal computer skills.
